Attendance and Absences

Missing school means your son or daughter misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.
Attendance is recorded each day. Parents or caregivers are responsible for ensuring their child attends school every day, including sports days unless:

  • your child has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
  • your child is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • your child is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
  • your child is sick, or has an infectious illness.

Students need to attend school regularly to meet the course requirements of the Record of School Achievement and Higher School Certificate.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the year advisor, principal or school counsellor.
If your child has to be absent from school for any reason including arriving late or leaving early, please provide an explanation to the school using the KMHS App, the Sentral Parent Portal, in writing or over the phone.

At Kariong Mountains High School we use finger scanning technology to record student attendance. Each student has a unique 5 point finger recognition pattern that is linked to their enrolment number. When students arrive at school they place their finger on the scanner and are recorded as being present on the school’s attendance monitoring database. This technology reduces paper wastage, eliminates mistakes due to teacher error and allows staff access to real time data about student attendance.

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device

As the DER funding program has finished many schools are looking to continue the successes of using technology for learning. As Kariong Mountains High School was established with technology as a focal point of the school we wish to continue to implement technology in the classroom. Students at present are able to access laptop trolleys and a class set of iPads. We have also seen an increase in students wanting to bring their own devices to assist with the learning they are doing at school.

On our policies page you can access the current guide for parents and students interested in bringing a device to school. There is also a copy of the agreement and responsibilities students must follow if they chose to bring a device to school.

Please feel free to contact the school if you have any queries in relation to BYOD.
