From our Principal

Once again we come to the end of another successful year of learning at Kariong Mountains High School. It has been a year of individual successes for many of our students and, as a school, the external validation process that was completed in October provided recognition of how most of our practices and programs reflect the Statements of Excellence as set out in the Department of Education’s School Excellence Framework. Well done, to our staff for creating the teaching and learning environment that led to this conclusion.

Celebrating Students’ Achievements

The year ended on a high point with an amazing display of student talent demonstrated during the “Evening of Excellence” and our two Presentation Ceremonies last Monday, in which we celebrated the achievements of our high performers and diligent workers. Congratulations, to all students who were a part of these events and, in particular, to Mollie Emery, this year’s recipient of the Principal’s Award.

Our Year 12 students are to be congratulated on achieving their HSC, with most students already having future pathways set or planned. Wherever they now head, we know that they will do so with the school’s values of Unity Knowledge Respect guiding their decisions and enriching their lives and those around them. As with all our alumni, we are proud of who they have become and the potential that they have.

Staff Changes

At the end of each year, we often have staff changes and saying farewell to staff who have helped shape our school’s culture and worked passionately with our students is always sad. This year, we extend our wishes for the very best in their future endeavours to Ms Doherty, Ms Hawkins, Mr Knowles, Mr Lester and Ms McKay. They are going to be greatly missed by us all.

I wish all our families, staff and students a happy and safe holiday break and look forward to working with you in the new year.

School Reports

Students in Years 7 to 10 have had their reports published, which are now available for viewing on Sentral. It is important that students carefully read these reports and reflect on the teacher comments. At the beginning of next year, students are encouraged to set themselves high goals and work hard to achieve them.

Presentation Awards

Congratulations, to all students who received awards at our presentation on Monday. It is great to see hard work rewarded and hopefully provide encouragement to continue to achieve.

As the year draws to a close, I would like to wish all students and their families a happy and safe holiday. We can look forward to another successful year in 2018.

Happy Holidays and Farewell

With the last newsletter of the year finally here, I wish everyone in our learning community a wonderful festive season and a well deserved break. As many of you will know, this is also my final newsletter column as I prepare to take on the position of Deputy Principal at Jindabyne Central School. I want to thank each staff member, student and member of the community who has made this school such an exceptional place to be part of over the last eight years. I look forward to following the KMHS journey from afar.

If you’re ever heading towards the ski fields and see me around the area, please stop and say hi.

Mr Jai Lester
Deputy Principal Years 7 and 12

Student Reports

In keeping with our paper-less school policies and to provide students and parents with lasting digital copies of reports, student school reports are emailed to parents/carers at the time of publication. If you have trouble finding the email, please do a quick search for ‘Report email’ (subject). Student reports are emailed directly from Sentral and will look different to other emails sent from the school.

Note: Make sure to notify the school if your email address has changed.

Note: Student reports can also be accessed directly in the Parent Portal.

Evening of Excellence

The 2017 Evening of Excellence, showcasing student work, was a fabulous night! Our talented and creative art students exhibited their artworks and photographs and our musically talented music students belted out awesome tunes.

Our drama students entertained visitors with street theatre and our dance students put on a dynamic performance. Technology showcased examples of talented student work from a variety of disciplines.

Kariong Mountains High school produces some incredibly creative and gifted students. Congratulations, to the award winners and thank you to all the participants, exhibitors, performers and helpers on the evening!

Year 12 Modern History excursion to Canberra

Modern History Excursion

Year 12 Modern History class travelled to the War Memorial in Canberra, where they spent more than three hours absolutely immersed in the displays, artefacts and interactive displays. Thank you to Mrs Taylor and Mr McGilvery for taking the group for the day and organising such a valuable and inspiring learning experience.

Gold Coast Year 10

The Year 10 excursion to the Gold Coast last week was a great success. The students have been an amazing group and an absolute credit to KMHS. Alongside completing the Crossroads program, the group had a fabulous time at both Sea World and Wet ‘n’ Wild, before returning to the Central Coast.
