Congratulations to Year 7 & Year 9 students for their excellent conduct and positive approach in NAPLAN last week!
From the Principal
Careers in the Future
Last week I attended a meeting for principals at the University of Newcastle, Ourimbah Campus, in order to discuss the new strategic plans that the university is implementing to better provide for the careers of the future. Once again, I heard the phrases: ‘jobs not yet invented’, ‘many different jobs, not just one for life’ and ‘less jobs for unskilled people’. These might sound clichéd, but clichés are that for a reason – there is an element of truth in them. For example, we may think that there will always be jobs for bricklayers, but the robots that are already being developed will one day be able to take over such tasks and the need for qualified bricklayers will decrease dramatically.
The importance of knowledge, as linked to content, seems to be becoming superseded in importance by a more transferrable skillset linked to communication, creativity and entrepreneurship. Encouraging our students to think outside the box and take on the risk of trying new ways of thinking and doing are critical to preparing them for their future success. It is certainly on our agenda, as we revise and review our teaching programs and co-curricula activities.
Have your SAY!
Over the next few months, we will be phoning randomly selected parents (to keep the bias out of our survey) to ask some questions about parent participation in schooling and the P&C. We are very interested in your thoughts about how to increase parent/community voice, in a way that works for you.
If you are selected, please help us out, so that we can use this information to improve what we do.
Ms Anne Vine
From the Deputy Principal
With cooler weather approaching, students are asked to be prepared and have the correct school uniform. Uniform is an important aspect of developing and maintaining our core value of Unity. Our uniform shop is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 9 am. If you have any questions regarding uniform, please feel free to contact me.
A gentle reminder that students need to provide a satisfactory explanation for any absence within 7 days of the absence. This can be done through our app, a written note or a phone call. Ms Matthew and I are working hard on maintaining good attendance for all of our students.
Preparations are underway for students in Year 10 who need to make subject selections for their HSC. Interviews with members from our Transition Team will occur soon. As dates are finalised for all aspects of this process, students and parents will be notified.
