Learning Opportunities and Choices

From our Principal

What a busy few weeks we have just had! For all our Year 12 students and their families, I hope that the Trial Exam period challenged students to achieve their best, identified areas for deeper learning and reinforced that, although a difficult time, it is more importantly a learning opportunity from which students can take away a plan for improvement as they move towards the HSC exams.

Science Week Expo

Congratulations once again, on our Learning Community’s fantastic efforts at the Science Week Expo. There are certainly some budding scientists of the future, demonstrating creativity and innovation which are recognised as the premier skill set of the future. Thank you, to all the staff involved in making this a success, in particular, Mr Cartner for his enthusiasm and dedication to science.

Stage 5 Subject Selection

Subject selection for Year 8 students takes place next week. Please remember that students should select for what will bring them ‘joy’ to learning, rather than a perceived requisite for future career choices. The only impact on future career directions is the skills that are gained through immersing yourself in new learning, developing problem solving skills, having persistence in learning and then communicating that knowledge and passion with others. These skills can be achieved in any selected elective. Having said that, keep an eye out for the new STEM elective we are offering for the first time in 2017! Kariong Mountains High School is really catering for studies in this important burgeoning field.

Ms Anne Vine, Principal

From our Deputy

Students, parents and staff will be emailed a survey shortly that looks at the mental health needs of our students and how we currently support them. I am looking to introduce a program to our school called Mind Matters. Data from the surveys will be analysed and this will determine the modules we introduce to address those needs. The survey should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Your support in this is appreciated and valuable.

The review of our Student Welfare and Discipline Policy and Anti-bullying Plan is almost complete. If you would like to contribute to the review, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Mr Scott White, Deputy Principal
