STEM and Subject Selection
From the Principal
It’s great to be back, recharged and revitalised, from an extended break and I am excited to begin working with our school community on planning for the 2017 school year.
I would like to say a very public thank you to all staff who stepped up, or just stepped in to help, during my absence. In particular, to the senior leadership team of Scott White, Lidia Jeffrey and Jacqui Matthew for their hard work and expertise in making the hard decisions when required and creating the opportunities for students and staff to thrive.
One of the aspects of my role that I have missed whilst away has been the opportunity to speak with parents about what we already do, what we have planned and what we can envision as a result of our partnership with the school community and knowledge of the new directions in education and technology.
I have just returned from an international conference on STEM (science, technology engineering and maths) and will share some of that learning with you in a future newsletter and at a P&C meeting. Current changes that are being made to our courses will be informed by cutting edge research and supported by long standing principles of quality teaching practice, firmly embedded in a climate that builds supportive relationships. I almost wish, at times, that I could be a student again because of these possibilities and opportunities!
An update on subject selection: I am looking at enrolment numbers now and we should be able to progress to the next stage of Yr 11 choices in the near future. Stage 5 subject choices will also be finalised in the next few weeks.
Ms Anne Vine, Principal
We ask that all students driving to school have a signed note from parents (available from the office). This allows us to monitor student safety and passengers allowed in the car, with parent knowledge.
Students ARE NOT PERMITTED to leave the school grounds in the middle of the day. There are grave concerns about safety and this is substantiated by calls we get from members of the public about students taking risks with driving.
Please, support us in keeping your child safe, both as a driver or passenger, and insist on this form to help with monitoring and identification.
Steven Herrick – Visiting KMHS Friday 19 August
The programme features a brief talk on being and author/poet and then a 45 minute performance. If you are interested please return your note and $4 to the front office as soon as possible.
Note: Payment can also be made online using our POP (Parent Payments Online) facility.
From the Deputy
Last Tuesday, approximately 40 students took advantage of a free dental service. Dental assessments and teeth cleaning were performed. This was an excellent opportunity that may be offered again later in the year and I encourage families to take advantage of this.
The University of NSW will be conducting a survey of some of our students in regards to their perception of needs. My Year 9 Senior Start and Year 7 Technology classes will be involved. Permission and explanation notes will be sent home soon. After the data is collected and analysed, we will be given feedback from the researchers which may help us address specific welfare issues that we may not be aware of.
On Wednesday last week, we hosted our partner schools for the LMG Day of Excellence as part of Education Week. Students from four of our partner schools and our students performed several items. Performances included singing, band, dance and choir. Activities such as this help the younger members of our educational community to transition into high school. Everyone who attended enjoyed the morning and special thanks must go to Mr Kane Burns and his team for the excellent organisation and functioning of the event.
Last Tuesday was my last day relieving as Principal and I have to say it has been an enjoyable experience. Getting to see our students, staff and whole school operations in a different light was very rewarding. I would like to thank everyone for their support and welcome back Ms Vine. Special thanks to Ms Jeffrey, Ms Matthew and Mrs Ayres and her team for their tireless efforts and support during this time.
Mr Scott White, Deputy Principal
Looking to a Future in Fashion
Congratulations to two former KMHS students, Maria Ganeko and Thup-Tim Clark, who have been selected to travel to the US for a month-long tour in the name of fashion.
The trip will give them a real insight into the fashion world, with visits planned to magazines and fashion companies.
The Express Advocate published a story about Maria Ganeko, as she excitedly prepares for her journey to the Big Apple in September.
Both Maria and Thup-Tim graduated from Kariong Mountains High School last year. It brings us great joy to see former students embracing dreams and going forward into their new adult ventures with leaps and bounds.
Tuesday Specials at the Canteen
On Tuesday 16 and 23 August, you can get Tandori Chicken on a crusty roll or on a bed of steamed rice for just $3.50
